Calendar is where you put study sessions, exams, deadlines and reminders. It has a month, week and day grid, lists of upcoming and past events, and a countdown to your next exam. You need an account to use it.

## The page at a glance

- **New event** (top right) opens a quick form for a plain event.
- The **Exams and events** panel shows the **Next exam** countdown and your other upcoming exams, then the **Upcoming** and **Past** lists.
- The grid shows your events in **Month**, **Week** or **Day** view. Use **‹** and **›** to move back and forward, and **Today** to come back to the current date.

The grid opens in month view. Week and day views show the hours from 6:00 to 22:00 in half-hour slots, with an all-day row at the top. On a phone, the view buttons move below the grid, each day shows at most two events (tap the "+ more" link for the rest), and events show as colored bars without times.

## Event types and colors

Every event has a type, set with **Type** in the event dialog:

| Type | Used for | Color on the grid |
|------|----------|-------------------|
| Event | Study blocks, classes, anything else | Lavender |
| Reminder | Things to remember at a set time | Amber |
| Deadline | Due dates | Brick red |
| Exam | Exams; these get the countdown | Green |

The type also shows as a badge on each item in the **Upcoming** and **Past** lists. Events copied from Google Calendar are Google blue and have a **Google** badge; see [Connecting Google Calendar](https://atheneum.app/docs/google-calendar).

## Create an event on the grid

1. Click an empty time slot, or drag across several slots. On a touch screen, tap a day or slot.
2. The **Create calendar item** dialog opens with the time you picked. If you picked a whole day in month view, it starts as 9:00–10:00 that day.
3. Enter a **Title** (up to 120 characters).
4. Choose a **Type**: **Event**, **Reminder**, **Deadline** or **Exam**.
5. Optional: tick **All day** (see below).
6. Check **Start** and **End** (or **First day** and **Last day** for an all-day event).
7. Optional: set **Reminder before start (minutes)**.
8. Select **Create**.

The first time you open this dialog, your browser may ask whether Atheneum can show notifications. That permission is used for reminders.

## Create an event with the quick form

1. Select **New event** at the top of the page.
2. Enter a **Title**, a **Start** and an **End**.
3. Optional: pick a **Color**.
4. Select **Save event**.

The quick form always makes a timed item of type **Event**. To make an exam, deadline, reminder or all-day item, use the grid, or edit the event afterwards.

## All-day events

Tick **All day** in the dialog to make an event that covers whole days, such as an exam day or a field trip. The fields change to **First day** and **Last day**; both days are included. An all-day event shows on the same dates wherever you are, because it's stored as dates, not times.

An event can last at most a year.

## Edit an event

1. Click (or tap) the event on the grid.
2. The **Edit calendar item** dialog opens. Change anything you like.
3. Select **Save changes**.

Changing the **Type** also changes the color to that type's color. If you leave the type as it is, the event keeps its color, including a custom color from the quick form.

## Delete an event

1. In the **Upcoming** or **Past** list, select the bin next to the event.
2. In **Delete event?**, select **Delete**.

Deleting is permanent. The edit dialog on the grid has no delete button, so use the lists. They show five events each, with a "more…" count below; the **Upcoming** list loads your next 60 events and **Past** covers the last 30 days.

If the event is synced with Google Calendar, deleting it here also deletes it in Google.

## Reminders

Set **Reminder before start (minutes)** to get a browser notification that many minutes before the event starts. For an all-day event the field is **Reminder before 9:00 that day (minutes)**: the reminder counts back from 9:00 on the first day.

Reminders have limits worth knowing:

- They only fire while the Calendar page is open in a tab, and only if you allowed notifications in your browser.
- Only reminders due within the next 24 hours are set up. The page refreshes them every hour while it stays open.
- There are no email or phone push reminders for calendar events.

Separately, the bell in the top bar shows notices such as "Calendar: today", "Calendar: tomorrow" and "Calendar: in 3 days" for events in the coming week.

## Exams

Every future event of type **Exam** appears in the **Exams and events** panel. The nearest one gets the **Next exam** card, with the number of days left (or "Today"), its title and date. The rest are listed below it, nearest first, each with its own count of days. The [Dashboard](https://atheneum.app/docs/dashboard) also shows your next exam and how far away it is.

Days are counted between local midnights, so an exam later today shows "Today", not "1 day".

## Time zones

Atheneum reads times in your device's time zone, which it detects from your browser. There is no time zone setting. When you enter 14:00, that's 14:00 where your device says you are; travel to another zone and the same event shows at the matching local time there. All-day events don't shift.

## Deadlines from Tasks

When you add a task with a deadline and turn on **Add reminder in Calendar**, Tasks creates an all-day **Deadline** item called "Task deadline: …" with a reminder set for 7:00 that morning. It's an ordinary calendar item from then on: edit or delete it here. See [Tasks](https://atheneum.app/docs/tasks).

## Troubleshooting

- **"Calendar lists could not be fully loaded. You can still create and edit events."** The lists failed to load. Reload the page in a moment.
- **"End time must be after the start."** or **"The last day can't be before the first."** Fix the times and save again.
- **"Events can last at most a year."** Split the event into shorter ones.
- **"Give it a title."** The title can't be empty.
- **A reminder didn't fire.** Keep the Calendar page open, and check that your browser allows notifications from Atheneum.
- **Tapping a day does nothing on my phone.** Tap inside the day cell, not on an event. Tapping an event opens it for editing.
