You can download a notebook as a single PDF that reads like a small book: a cover, a contents page, then everything made for the notebook, and an end page. It's useful for printing, for reading offline, or for keeping a copy outside Atheneum. Export is on every plan and doesn't use AI credits.
Export a notebook
- Open the notebook from Notebooks.
- Select Settings in the rail.
- Under Export notebook as PDF, select Export PDF. The button shows Preparing… while the PDF is made.
- The download starts, and you'll see "Download started."
The file is named after the notebook.
What's in the PDF
The PDF is A4, in the same design as the free study-guide book on the Guides page. Every page after the cover has the notebook's name and the page number at the bottom.
- Cover: the Atheneum logo, the notebook's name, the export date and how many of each thing it holds.
- Contents: the six sections, with every item listed under its section and linked to it.
- Files: each file, oldest upload first, with its upload date and its AI summary. A file without a summary shows "No summary yet."
- Study guides: every study guide made for the notebook.
- Summaries: every summary of the whole notebook.
- Quizzes: each quiz's questions, with the choices lettered A, B, C…, followed by an Answer key, so you can test yourself before you look.
- Flashcards: each deck as a table of fronts and backs.
- Notes: every note written in the notebook.
- End page: "Made with Atheneum" and a link back to the site.
Each section starts on a new page, and an empty one says so (for example "No quizzes yet."). Summaries, study guides and notes keep their formatting: headings, bold, lists, tables and quotes are printed as they look in the app. In a shared notebook, each item says who added it.
What's not in the PDF
- The files themselves. Download a file from its ⋯ menu when you need the original.
- Your own progress: quiz scores, card schedules and review history.
- Folders. Files are listed in one sequence, whatever folder they're in.
Very large notebooks
The PDF holds about 1.5 million characters of content. If a notebook has more, the sections fill in order (files first, notes last) until the limit, and each section that couldn't fit everything ends with "N more items left out: the export reached its size limit." Nothing is cut off mid-item. When it happens, the download message adds "The notebook was too large for one export, so some items were left out; each section says how many."
When you get an HTML file instead
Sometimes the PDF can't be made on the server. In that case Atheneum downloads a print-ready HTML file with the same content, and says "Downloaded print-ready HTML. Use your browser's Print → Save as PDF." Open the file in your browser, choose Print, and pick Save as PDF as the printer.
Shared notebooks
Anyone in the notebook can export it, owner or member, viewer included. Each person's exports count against their own limits. The export covers everything in the notebook, including what other people added.
Limits
| Free | Pro and Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Exports per hour | 3 | 10 |
| Exports per day | 5 | No daily cap |
The export has 30 seconds to finish on Free, 45 on Pro and 60 on Max. An exam pass counts as Max for these limits.
Troubleshooting
- "This notebook is empty. Add a file or a note before exporting." There's nothing in the notebook yet. A notebook with only notes, or only a quiz, can be exported.
- "Export timed out — try again or split a very large notebook." The PDF took too long. Try again; if it keeps happening, move some files into another notebook.
- "This notebook could not be exported." You're no longer in this notebook, or it no longer exists.
- "That's a lot in a few minutes. Try again in …" You've reached the hourly or daily export limit above. The message says how long to wait.
- "Could not reach export service." The request didn't get an answer. Check your connection and try again.
