Your work is yours. You can take copies of it out of Atheneum, delete your notebooks while keeping your account, or delete the account and everything in it. This article also covers the one case where Atheneum deletes files on its own: free accounts that go unused for a year.

Export your work

There's no single "download everything" button. Each kind of content has its own export:

WhatHowFormat
A whole notebookOpen the notebook → Settings tab → Export notebook as PDF → Export PDFOne PDF with everything: files with summaries, study guides, summaries, quizzes with answers, flashcards and notes
A file you uploadedOn the notebook's Files tab, open the file's ⋯ menu → DownloadThe original file
Flashcards made from one fileFile ⋯ menu → Export to Anki (generates the cards, so it uses AI credits)Tab-separated .txt for Anki
A flashcard deckReview → Flashcards → the deck's Export to AnkiTab-separated .txt for Anki
A note in a notebookOpen the note → Download .md, or Download .md on the Notes tabMarkdown (.md)
Notes and Tasks as a guestExport on the "Saved only in this browser" noticeJSON

Exporting a notebook as PDF is on every plan. On Free you can export 3 times an hour and 5 times a day; paid plans can export 10 times an hour. See Exporting a notebook as PDF and Anki import and export.

Things that have no export today include your Athena conversations, calendar events (other than through Google Calendar sync), quiz history, points and badges.

Delete all your notebooks

This removes your study material but keeps your account, points, badges, tasks, calendar and everything else.

  1. Open Settings → Danger zone.
  2. Under Delete all notebooks, type DELETE in the box.
  3. Select Delete all notebooks.

Every notebook you own and every file you've uploaded is deleted permanently. That includes notebooks you've shared, which disappear for their members too, and files you added to other people's shared notebooks. It can't be undone. When it's done you see "Notebooks cleared. Removed … file objects." If some stored objects couldn't be removed straight away, the message says they'll be cleaned up later.

Delete your account

  1. Open Settings → Danger zone.
  2. Under Delete your account, confirm it's you:
    • with a password: enter your Current password;
    • with Google only: select Confirm with Google and sign in again (this lasts 10 minutes).
  3. Type DELETE MY ACCOUNT in the box.
  4. Select Permanently delete account.

You're signed out and taken to the home page. Deletion is immediate and permanent, and Atheneum can't recover anything afterwards. Export what you want to keep first.

What gets deleted

Your account and everything in it: notebooks and their files, notes, summaries, study guides, flashcard decks and quizzes, Athena conversations, tasks, calendar events and the Google Calendar connection, points, streaks and badges, your friends list (and your place on other people's lists), Review history, AI usage records, exam passes, push-notification devices, your email settings and any AI key you added.

Your subscription

An active Pro or Max subscription is cancelled immediately as part of deleting the account, so you're never billed for an account that no longer exists. If Atheneum can't cancel it automatically, nothing is deleted and you see: "We couldn't cancel your subscription automatically, so nothing was deleted. Cancel it from Your plan → Manage billing, then delete your account again — or email support@atheneum.app."

Shared notebooks

  • Notebooks you own and share with a contributor don't disappear. Each one passes to one of its contributors, together with everything you put in it: the contributor who added the most, or, on a tie, the one who used it most recently (then one chosen at random).
  • Notebooks you share only with viewers are deleted with your account.
  • Files you uploaded to other people's notebooks are deleted with your account. If you want them to stay in that notebook, leave the notebook before deleting your account: leaving hands what you added to its owner. See Sharing a notebook.

Inactive free accounts

Stored files are the one thing that keeps costing money while nobody uses an account, so on the free plan, uploaded files are deleted after 12 months without use.

  • Who it applies to: accounts on Free that have uploaded files. Pro, Max and accounts with a running exam pass are never affected.
  • What counts as use: using Atheneum while signed in. Visiting once resets the clock.
  • Warnings: an email 7, 3, 2 and 1 days before the deletion date, and one on the day. The date is never less than 7 days after the first warning. If any warning can't be delivered, the date moves back and the warnings start again. Nothing is ever deleted without all five.
  • How to stop it: sign in, upgrade, or start an exam pass. Any of these cancels the deletion.
  • What goes: only the files you uploaded, the text extracted from them and quizzes made from a single file. Your account, notebooks, notes, summaries, study guides and flashcard decks are kept.
  • Shared notebooks: before your files go, a notebook you share with a contributor who's been active in the last year is handed to that contributor, and you stay on as a contributor.

Troubleshooting

"Type "DELETE" to confirm deleting all notebooks." or "Type "DELETE MY ACCOUNT" to confirm permanent account deletion." The confirmation text must match exactly, in capitals.

"Your notebooks have too many files to clear in one step. Delete some notebooks first, then try again." Delete a few large notebooks from their own pages first, then try again. Nothing was deleted.

"Your account has too many files to delete in one step. Clear your notebooks first, then try again." Same fix: delete notebooks first, then delete the account.

"Current password is incorrect." or "Too many password attempts. Try again in 15 minutes." See Account security.

"For your security, confirm it's you by signing in with Google again, then retry." Select Confirm with Google, then delete the account within 10 minutes.
